Y13: A2 Chemistry

AS and A2 Chemistry

In the sixth form chemistry classes we follow the AQA chemistry course. This is made up of two units in AS and two units in A2. In both AS and A2 you will also complete a practical ISA task.

The course extends the content you have learned at GCSE and moves you forward over the two years.

The units that you will study are as follows;

AS – Year 12

Unit 1
Atomic Structure
Amount of Substance
Bonding
Periodicity
Introduction to Organic Chemistry
Alkanes

Unit 2
Energetics
Equilibrium
Redox
Halogens
Group 11
Extraction of Metals
Haloalkanes
Alkenes
Alcohols

Unit 1 will be covered until January of year 12 and serves as a good introduction to the course and the principles you will study. Unit 2 will be covered until the examinations in June with an ISA completed during this period. You will be given the title of this a few weeks before starting it.

A2- Year 13

Unit 4
Kinetics
Equilibria
Acids and Bases
Nomenclature
Compounds containing the carbonyl compound
Aromatic chemistry
Amines
Amino acids
Polymerisation
Synthetic routes
Structural determination

Unit 5
Thermodynamics
Periodicity
Redox equilibria
Transition metals

Unit 4 is studied in the period from September to January. An ISA is completed after Christmas and Unit 5 is then studied.
At both AS and A2 you will have two teachers and they will split the topics studied accordingly.
