Textiles in the second year at John Warner focuses on making a draw string bag. The bag is made of 100% cotton and tie dyed to add colour. The pupils learn how the tie dye process works and examine the science of fixing agents on different fabrics. The group then learn how to use a sewing machine and all the different techniques which can be shown. The pupils learn all the different parts of a sewing machine and how to thread one. The design aspect of the project is a logo or picture which will be placed on the front of the bag. This is painted on using stencils and acrylic paint to make it permanent. Finally the pupils have to assemble their bags and make sure that the draw string aspect works correctly to make it successful.
