Food technology in year 8 builds on work in year 7; however, the pupils explore the science of cooking in more detail. They look at raising agents and how they work which involves making their own bread roles and pizza dough. They also decorate their own cakes and think about the difficult art of personalising and adorning cakes in different styles. The groups also learn a lot about team work and working to a deadline, as most items which they cook need specific cooking time. Food hygiene is also a strong theme throughout with the pupils learning about correct food storage and preparation.
