Electronics in year 8 looks more at the design of circuit boards and the way they work. The students have to assemble a circuit board using different tiny components and make sure that they are in exactly the right place. If they are not then the circuit will not work and the pupils have to problem solve to get it working again. The students use the soldering iron more extensively and examine the dangers and precautions which must be taken when using them. The circuit board is again housed in a box but this time the box is made of plastic and formed using a vacuum former. The pupils love seeing how this machine works and what the possibilities are. The circuit itself works using a light dependant resistor which turns on a buzzer when light hits it. The ‘personal alarm’ project is design to be placed in a drawer for security.
