Product design in year 8 focuses on more delicate and intricate woodworking skills. The pupils make a personalised picture frame which is mean to hold a special photograph inside. The pupils use chisels and mallets to create two lap joints for which the frame will be constructed. Then the group use coping saws to cut a section at the top of the frame into a shape or letter to make the frame even more personalised. The students need to be precise and focused for this project as many things can go wrong. Once the frame is constructed, they then use wood burners to finalise the product. There is another aspect of design however, which involves making the card housing for the photograph. This also has to be decorated using pencils and it must be neat and shaded which is another skill which they gain more experience with.
