Product design in year 7 involves making a wooden trinket box, which the pupils can design a pattern to decorate with at the end. The pupils get first-hand experience at using the pillar drill and using different size drill bits for the specific areas of the projects. A Forsner bit is used to drill a large hole in the box for the contents. The pupils need to think ahead and plan their design to match what possible items the box may hold. Health and safety in the workshop is essential and covered extensively using worksheets and practice tasks. The pupils learn correct procedure for reporting accidents and breakage. All appropriate safety equipment is provided. Finally the pupils get to use as wide range of machinery and woodworking tools to complete their projects. The pupils also look at technical drawing skills during this project including perspective drawing.
